In my opinion, the first week of March is the finest weekend to live in Austin. Sure, some may argue for a few weeks later when SXSW dominates the town, or some might opt for dates in the fall when ACL or UT football games happen. But, it’s the first weekend in March for me because not only is the weather usually spectacular, but Saturday is Explore UT (the open house for the University of Texas) and Sunday is the Zilker Kite Festival, the nation’s oldest continuous kite festival. This was the first time to take Jude to explore UT and tell him all about going to college at the University of Texas. I will say, for a 4 year old, he wasn’t that impressed. But I think after sliding near the main building, meeting Bevo (or photobombing Bevo, as it were), and the turtle pond, I was making inroads to having a little Longhorn. We even got to visit my old dorm, and an RA was sweet enough to take us up to the ol’ 11th floor. Jude didn’t quite grasp that I no longer have any rights or claim to Room 1142 and couldn’t just enter it. I am sure the Madison/Kaitlyn/Hannah/Taylor/Emma living in that room now wouldn’t appreciate it at all.
The kite festival was a lot of fun. The weather was warmer than the previous day, and the sky was absolutely beautiful. We were smart enough to get there early this year to enjoy the festivities before we were elbow to elbow with all the other Austinites. Jude flew his first kite, and got lots of free swag, like the little Austin hipster that he is.
Poor baby Jude, though, he was starting to fall ill and all that Austin fun wore him out. He actually said he was tired and wanted to go home. He ended up with high fever that night, so Monday we stayed home. Monday, I found him asleep on the floor when I thought he was watching cartoons. Apparently, living the Austin high life will take it out of ya!
